Me : Mya SINQUEFIELD, The Owner + Maker + Customer Support of PB
In 2012 my father passed away, and I was blessed enough to receive some "confidence money," as my grandmother calls it. I wanted to take the money and grow something, not just for myself but for everyone around me. Something with made with care, purpose, and intention.
After many business plans, 2015 Predominantly Black launched as an online monochromatic women's boutique featuring upcoming edgy/contemporary designers.
Years of attending LAFW + NYFW . We had a time!
However, the end goal for PB was to go brick and morter, and I wanted to create something that would get the PB name out into the world. Rehashing my retail days, I remembered branding is key, and decided to create something for PB in house (HAUS) 😉.
First, I wanted to test candles with the PB audience. I contacted a small woman-owned candle company in Phoenix for their line sheet. I though her candles were cute and well priced (from a customer standpoint) . The candles sold out in DAYS!
So I said to myself... ok... lets crank this up a little. Around October 2018, I enrolled in YouTube University (not a real school) and learn candle-making from the top makers. When I say 'top candle makers', I mean they've tested every single wax, with every single wick, with all the additives!
About one month and some days later , I deemed myself a YT Graduate and made my first set of candles. You may know them as the OG's , Solitude, Madness, and Subtle.
Due to the blissfully overwhelming response to our candles, we relaunched as A Predominantly Black Candle Haus in 2020. From my kitchen to a loft space and prayerfully our new warehouse in the future and non-profit.
